There are many versions of this song. The one that I am most familiar with is that a young man went to court a young lady.
Her mother was jealous of her daughter. She set him to the task of twisting straw to make rope.
As you twist the straw rope, you have to walk backwards while it ravels. The girl’s mother makes him walk backwards twisting the rope till he’s outside the door, then slams it shut!
